Track 2 - "NASHVILLE CATS"

I've always loved the whimsy of this old Lovin Spoonful song and it was great to have my old friend and musical mentor David Wilcox show his country guitar skills on this version. David was a pal of Lovin Spoonful guitarist Zal Yanowsky as was Amos Garrett who David knew in Toronto and in Woodstock N.Y. in the early '70's.

After he stopped playing Zal owned and operated a restaurant in Kingston Ontario and often came out to see us playing with either David or Amos at the legendary "Dollar Bill's" in the Prince George Hotel. He sat in a few times including singing a memorable rendition of the absurd "Don't You Just Know It" by Huey 'Piano' Smith.

The last time I ran into Zal was on the concourse at a Blue Jays game sometime in the team's 'glory years'. You're missed Zal, but we still can enjoy the amazing music he gave us and his wonderful restaurant "Chez Piggy" is still there in downtown Kingston.

"NASHVILLE CATS" --lyrics

CHORUS
Nashville cats play clean as country water
Nashville cats play wild as mountain dew
Nashville cats been playing since they's babies
Nashville cats get work before they're two

There's 1352 guitar pickers in Nashville
And they can pick more notes than the number of ants on a Tennessee anthill
There's 1352 guitar cases in Nashville
And any one that unpacks his guitar can play twice as better than I will

I was just 13 you might say I was a musical proverbial 'knee-high'
And I heard a couple of new-sounding tunes on the tubes and they blasted me sky-high
The record man said "Every one is a yellow Sun record from Nashville,
And up north nobody buys them," and I said "But I will!!"

CHORUS
Nashville cats play clean as country water
Nashville cats play wild as mountain dew
Nashville cats been playing since they's babies
Nashville cats get work before they're two

Well there's 16,821 mothers in Nashville
And all their friends play music so they ain't uptight if one of their kids will '
Cause it's custom made for every mother's son to be a guitar picker in Nashville
And I sure am glad I got a chance to say a word about the music and the mothers from Nashville

CHORUS
Nashville cats play clean as country water
Nashville cats play wild as mountain dew
Nashville cats been playing since they's babies
Nashville cats get work before they're two
