Track 6 - "WYOMING"

When I wrote this song I was thinking of it as pure 'songwriting', writing for someone else to sing. I have to admit it seems to have taken on a life of its own amongst the people I played it for so I decided to try my hand at the lead vocal.

I guess it really could be sung by either a man or a woman but I am delighted that my old friend and musical co-hort Gwen Swick agreed to contribute her lovely harmony part. And Murray McLauchlan got to dust off his "Floyd (Cramer) thumb" and add the piano part which graces the chorus'. That's me soloing on the Hofner parlour guitar at the end.

There is no one specific on whom the song was based but I did play a week at the Ranchman's, Calgary's huge iconic roadhouse, around the time I wrote it and I think I found at least some of the inspiration for the woman in the song while I was 'people watching' between sets.

And I hope it doesn't ruin the song for anyone if I admit that I picked Wyoming simply because it sounds romantic, I've never been to Wyoming, and I certainly hope there's water there for the moonlight to shine on.

"WYOMING" lyrics

She'd like to think he's the man that she wants
And he would be, if only he'd change.
But it's hard to stay hopeful when leaving's so easy
And staying so hard to arrange.
Because being together is so strange

CHORUS
And she thinks of Wyoming and remembers that summer
Moonlight on water and time standing still.
She curses the cowboy who told her he loved her,
And hopes that someday she'll find someone who will.

She leans on 'pretty' and he's just offhand
is there nowhere to meet in between?
Friday night lovin' then six days of nothin'
But there's no point in causing a scene.
It's just somewhere she's already been.

CHORUS
And she thinks of Wyoming and remembers that summer
Moonlight on water and time standing still.
She curses the cowboy who told her he loved her,
And hopes that someday she'll find someone who will.

Evenings of small talk and dark crowded dance halls
The touch of a curious hand
Still doing her best to find the right someone
And hoping that he'll understand.
She's still hoping that he'll understand.

CHORUS
And she thinks of Wyoming and remembers that summer
Moonlight on water and time standing still.
She curses the cowboy who told her he loved her,
And hopes that someday she'll find someone who will.
